(Versión en inglés) “I dreamt to be the champion from the beginning”

Italian boxer Martina La Piana comes to Buenos Aires 2018 with the European youth title (less than 51 kilos) in her hands. In this exclusive interview, she comments on her style inside the ring and her future dreams.

There are less than 100 days remaining before the Olympic Youth Games. Boxing, like the rest of the sports, will bring young athletes from all over the world to prove themselves. Among all of them, an Italian boxer, who is already European youth champion in flyweight (up to 51 kilos), will arrive to compete.

Martina La Piana earned her ticket to Buenos Aires 2018 in her native Italy, four years after getting in the ring for the first time. "I didn’t imagine that I could become a continental champion, although it's something I dreamt from the beginning," said one of the candidates to win in this discipline.

Even though she ensures the classification for the Youth Games is their greatest satisfaction so far, the Italian puts the bar really high for October: "Now that I'm in, my goal is simply to win the gold medal".

To know a little bit about the style of boxer that La Piana is, she describes herself as a knocker, someone who always goes aggressive willing to attack anyone who has in front. "I prefer to take the initiative, and my ace up my sleeve is the crossing. Also, being left-handed always made me succeed very well”, she says, showing a lot of confidence on herself.

The young Italian, who will show her skills in October, allows herself to dream beyond 2018. A world title would be reaching the glory, and also has in mind taking part at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020. With no doubt, to stand out in that event would represent a great milestone, because she would do so in a short age.

As for boxing itself, as long as a big gap (in terms of importance) between men and women tries to close, Martina La Piana believes that "finally you see female boxing at the same level as the male." And in the middle of this growth of the female boxing, she will try to break through to succeed and build a great career.
